Eve Arnold waited until her 60s before publishing her first book & when she did, she was clear about the subject: “This is how it feels to be a woman, seen through the eyes and camera of one woman - images unretouched, for the most part unposed and unembellished.”

Ardnold was the first woman to join Magnum Photos in 1951 and is known for her famous portraits of Marilyn Monroe. Travel characterized much of her work, and Arnold photographed everything from the Civil Rights and Black Power movements in America to the Tolstoy family and Queen Elizabeth II.

Ardnold’s refusal to retouch woman in the 1950s was seen as radical. What’s even more radical is how hotly contested the topic remains 70 years later.
